Bellingham is a Canadian retail haven, as it is the northernmost city in these contiguous United States. Many travel to the city for cheaper retail shopping, gasoline, and airfare. Highly acclaimed for its ease of access to the North Cascades and the San Juan Islands, the outdoors tourism is a constant stream of economic income for the city. With about 80,000 citizens, it is a relatively smaller city with a big heart.
The city is actually very young and has a very large college student population: Western Washington University is based in Bellingham and boasts around 16,000 students, not including the three community colleges in the city. To put the affordability of Bellingham into perspective: average rent for a one-bedroom is about $710 dollars while Seattle is $1,200 dollars or more.
