Founded in 1984 and operating as a public aquarium, the center is a focal point in ocean research and conservation for the west coast. With over 35,000 animals spanning over 640 species, the aquarium is a testament to the ocean and the beauty that lies within. the centerpiece of the aquarium is its 28-foot high window peering into a kelp forest and the animals in their respective habitats. Seeing over 1.8 million people a year, it has even housed a great white in its massive tanks, some over 1.5 million gallons!
