Mexico Just legalized medical marijuana when the president Enrique Pena Nieto announced legalization.
The Ministry of Health is now working on the regulations and implementation of these policies and we can expect some guidance shortly over the next couple months.
Mexico has a history of controlling private industries most notably Pemex, the largest petroleum company, which is primarily owned by the Mexican government. Pemex has a long history of alleged corruption, and we’re curious to see if this similar business extends into cannabis. Currently cannabis production is dominated by drug cartels who control the entire marijuana market and frequently wage war with other cartels who sell in their territory.
For many years cannabis has been highly illegal in Mexico and getting caught with cannabis was a serious offense warranting jail time. There are many stories of travelers being extorted for possession of small amounts and threatened with jail time or being put in jail.
This new view of cannabis in the eyes of the government will hopefully make Mexico a safer place to travel and push the rest of North America to implement more progressive drug policies!
