Located in the heart of the “South Shore,” Plymouth is the location of the first European settlement and the birthplace of New England. With a population of about 56,468, the city is currently the 19th largest in Massachusetts. Sitting about 40 miles south of Boston, the town was officially incorporated immediately upon settlement in 1620. This area is obviously rich with history as it is the oldest American dwelling.
More recently the city has become a popular tourist location. People want to come see Plymouth Rock, and learn more about the first Thanksgiving. In fact, the city sees a huge spike in people coming to town around November for the Thanksgiving holiday. The city also has the oldest museum in the country, the Pilgrim Hall Museum. This facility houses many artifacts, and continues to teach more and more people about the history of American settlement.
There is also a replica of the Mayflower, dubbed the Mayflower II that sits at the State Pier in Plymouth Center. The ship can be toured and shows what it was like in the ships as they were making the trek West from England. The ship also leaves the pier regularly to show how it actually moves and handles in the water.
If you’re not much of a history buff but still love the great outdoors, the Myles Standish State Forest is a popular spot to get out and spend some serious time immersed in nature. There’s tons of lakes and ponds and the fishing and hiking around here are legendary.
Unfortunately there are currently no medical marijuana dispensaries located in town, but with the recent legalization of marijuana for recreational use in the state of Massachusetts, we hope that it will mean that some recreational shops will open their doors to the public in the area in the near future!
