With a population of around 109,945, the city of Lowell is the fourth largest city in the state of Massachusetts. The town was officially incorporated in 1826, and grew rapidly as a mill town. With a huge number of factories and textile mills, this area is known as being “the cradle of the American Industrial Revolution.” The area had the largest concentration of mills and factories in the country in the 1850s.

Today, many of the original factories and mills have been historically preserved, and can be toured. It’s pretty fascinating to see all of the different goods that were once produced in town. The town also has the second largest concentration of Cambodian-Americans, as the city was quick to offer housing and opportunities to the Cambodian people when they were facing genocide.

Today, Lowell doesn’t produce nearly what the did formerly, but they see a lot of tourism due to the historical nature of the area, as well as the beautiful landscape of the town. The city is located at the confluence of the Concord and Merrimack rivers, and water activities are highly popular in the area. Rowing, kayaking and standup paddleboarding are the things to do in the warm months, and can be seen all over the rivers. There is also a 4 mile stretch of rapids for those interested in seeking white water.

The Pawtucket Falls, end right at the confluence of the two rivers in town, and are a great opportunity to see the town from a different perspective. The rivers also flow an additional 40 miles to hit the Atlantic Ocean, which is pretty cool.

As luck would have it, there is currently a medical marijuana dispensary located in Lowell, so if you have a state sanctioned medical marijuana card, get down there and get yourself some medicine! As the recreational use of marijuana was recently legalized for adults age 21 and over, we would be surprised if more shops didn’t open in town within the next year or so, so keep your eyes peeled!
