With a population of around 78,197, the city of Lawrence is the 12th largest in the state of Massachusetts. The city was officially incorporated in 1853, but today is known as being a hub for the production of a wide variety of goods. Located near the Northeastern border of the state, Lawrence sits on the Merrimack River, and the town used this body of water greatly to their advantage. After building the Great Stone Dam, they were able to dig trenches through town so that many factories could utilize the water power that was able to assist in the production of different goods and textiles.
The town is also famous for being the childhood home of the brilliant poet and writer, Robert Frost. I imagine that Frost took a lot of his inspiration for his works from growing up where he did. Frost started publishing his first works while living in Lawrence, and they ran in his high school newspaper! I guess he figured out that “nothing gold can stay,” because he left Lawrence shortly after completing his high school education.
If you’re not a “Frost-y” – both vocalist Robert Goulet and Aerosmith guitarist, Joe Perry got their starts in Lawrence. It’s pretty cool to see all of the creativity and talent that have come out of town!
A great place in town that showcases much of the local talents is the Essex Art Center. The facility houses a wide variety of different art mediums, and constantly has a rotating schedule of events and exhibits. It is really cool to see a town appreciate the arts as much as Lawrence does!
Unfortunately there are currently no medical marijuana dispensaries located in town, but with the recent legalization of marijuana for recreational use in the state of Massachusetts, we hope that it will mean that some recreational shops will open their doors to the public in the area in the near future!
