With a population of about 55,298, the city of Chicopee is the 22nd largest in the state of Massachusetts. The city wasn’t officially incorporated until 1848, but was first settled in 1640. The town was named for the Chicopee River, which feeds into the Connecticut River, which oddly enough is the actual river the town sits on.The city grew over time with a wide variety of different industries taking form in the area over time.
There never was one particular source of income for the people in Chicopee, but for a while, the town was the largest producer of bicycles in the entire country. The majority of the workforce in town has historically been industrial jobs, but the town is also mostly a residential area now. Back in the day there were several factories, mills, and other institutions of producing goods around town, but those industries have waned.
Chicopee is also home to the Westover Air Reserve Base, where the annual Great New England Air Show is held. This event is huge in New England, and some years the crowds surpass 300,000 people in attendance of the 2 day show that features some of the greatest pilots and fastest planes executing dangerous maneuvers at high speeds with awe inspiring precision. This event is definitely something to check out if you are into that sorta thing!
The city also has a ton of beautiful parks and natural offerings. The Chicopee Memorial State Park offers world class hiking with stunning views, and there are two good sized ponds that are great for swimming, or fishing!
Unfortunately there are currently no medical marijuana dispensaries located in town, but with the recent legalization of marijuana for recreational use in the state of Massachusetts, we hope that it will mean that some recreational shops will open their doors to the public in the area in the near future!
