With a population of about 45,193, the city of Barnstable is the largest community on Cape Cod, and also is the 27th largest city in the state of Massachusetts. The city was officially incorporated in 1989, but settlement began significantly earlier in 1638. The town is located on the southern peninsula of the state, and grew alongside their bustling agricultural, fishing, and salting industries.
Today, the town is home to the Barnstable Municipal Airport, which is the hub that you must go through to get to Cape Cod, or popular tourist islands Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. Due to the fact, many many people travel through the city every day, and this brings big money – not to mention the area is super ritzy, so the people that are coming through are typically super wealthy. Those in the service industry do pretty darn well for themselves today.
The town has a crazy amount of notable people from there. First and foremost, the Kennedy family is from Barnstable, and that is a pretty huge deal. Others from the area include: bass player from Aerosmith – Tom Hamilton, Judy Garland, Jack Kerouac, blues singer – Paul Pena, and Kurt Vonnegut. The area was also a popular travel destination of the rich and wealthy, so seeing celebrities in the area is never a rare occurrence.
The seafood out here is some of the best in the country. If you don’t at least have some fish and chips while you’re in town, you’re not doing it right.
Unfortunately there are currently no medical marijuana dispensaries located in town, but with the recent legalization of marijuana for recreational use in the state of Massachusetts, we hope that it will mean that some recreational shops will open their doors to the public in the area in the near future!
