What luck! The Maine Marijuana Legalization Initiative barely passed this November 8th, and all adults over the age of 21 gained the right to purchase and possess recreational marijuana.

Maine became one of the first states on the East Coast to legalize marijuana, and will soon see the benefits of being able to tax a resource that the people will get their hands on regardless if it is legal or not.

The state plans to tax marijuana similarly to how they already tax alcohol and tobacco, and will produce a huge increase of funding for the state in which they can apply to education and infrastructure, amongst other avenues they can take.

The state currently offers medical marijuana to those who receive a doctor’s recommendation, and have done so since 1999. Recreational shops should open in the near future as well!

A few items in the prop varied from other states that have legalized cannabis before them, and it offers some exciting opportunities for adults. For instance, individuals now are allowed to possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana, including concentrates, and grow 6 flowering plants and 12 non-flowering plants. The Initiative also legalized marijuana social clubs, and how cool is that?

Be sure to check back here for updates as to when recreational shops start opening!
