Is there a tax in California, and if so, how much is it?

California is currently considering establishing a 15% tax on medical marijuana state wide. Similarly, some municipalities, such as San Diego, are considering a city tax on medical marijuana. Local municipalities tend to tax marijuana at about 7.5%. The California Assembly has recently passed a tax bill with overwhelming support. A similar bill recently passed the senate as well.

Yes, there is a tax on Marijuana in California. The tax for Marijuana differs by county in California. Overall, in California the average tax rate is 8%. In some counties it is a few percentage points lower, such as Siskiyou County which is at 7.5%. Counties overall are given the choice when it comes to tax rates for Marijuana.

The sales tax on pot in the state of California varies anywhere from 7.5% to 8% depending on locality. Note this is in addition to your purchase price and card fee. Vendors and dispensaries are often hit with a slew of taxes and audits as well and so unfortunately this is passed down to the consumer also. Your cheapest bet is always in less dense suburbs. Good luck

In addition to the points already made by previous posters, if the Adult Use of Marijuana Act (AUMA), also known as Proposition 64, is passed in a few weeks, recreational marijuana will likely be taxed more than medical marijuana is, which will raise prices for recreational users, but ultimately gain the state a huge boom in tax dollars that they can apply to education, infrastructure, or whatever they see fit.
