With a population of just over 168,000 people, Lancaster, California is the 31st largest town in the state. Sitting about 70 miles North of downtown Los Angeles, the town has grown like wildfire lately. Lancaster was officially incorporated in 1977, and at that time they had roughly 37,000 residents. In the 2010 U.S. Census, the town had a population of about 156,000 – meaning that in 33 years, they had gained almost 120,000 citizens moving into the town. This much growth is beyond significant!
The town appreciates where they came from and have several sites around town that honor pilots and test pilots from nearby Edwards Air Force Base. One thing you have to see if you go to Lancaster is the Aerospace Walk of Honor. This area in town has many memorials, plaques, statues and more. There is even a restored F-4 Phantom II fighter jet on a pedestal on display at Boeing Plaza.
Another interesting aspect to town is that there is over 600 acres of parks, tons of trails and bikeways, and other opportunities to get outdoors. One of the best places for outdoor exploration is the Antelope Valley California Poppy Preserve. The Poppy flower grows in a huge abundance as far as the eye can see from February through May, but is a great place for a hike year-round. The California Poppy Festival brings huge crowds to town every year to celebrate Earth Day, Springtime, and the flower itself. Many people look forward to this event all year long!
Another cool thing about Lancaster is that they are one of the few places in the country that have a musical road! What’s a musical road, you ask? It’s a road that has been grooved so that when you drive over them, your tires hum a song for the length of the grooves. The one in Lancaster plays the William Tell Overture, or the Lone Ranger Theme – depending on what you recognize it most from. This is a really fun thing to see and hear – especially if you’re baked! Just don’t smoke and drive, find a designated driver first!
Oh, happy day! Lancaster has two medical marijuana dispensaries already, and because the Adult Use of Marijuana Act was passed on November 8th, you can expect at least a few recreational shops will open in the future! Keep your eyes peeled for more information as it becomes available!
